STEM Aborignial Learners Congress 2023
The time had come for the STEM Aboriginal Learners Congress at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th of August. We started both mornings very early with 4 excited and nervous students and made our way to Adelaide, upon arriving at the Convention Centre we then went straight up to our room to set up our presentation.
After setting up we made our way the main hall where we joined 1200 other people to listen to the opening of the congress by our Premier and the first key note speaker Daniel Riley from the Australian Dance Theatre. After listening to Daniel, we made our way back to our room to prepare for the first presentation. During our presentation Connor left to go do an interview with SBS.
We then participated in a workshop about launching a VR Spear. After a nice lunch we returned to the main hall to listen to Mikaela Jade from Indigital, after listening to Mikaela we then close out the first day by host a Spotlight on STEM Yarn with Peter Reeve who is an Astrophysicist and works at the Bureau of Metrology.
Arriving in on the Friday the girls went straight up to the room to once again set up while Connor went into the main hall to prepare for his speech up on the main stage. The conference then started with the welcome back for day 2 and the first key note speaker for the day Natan Noel a marine biologist. His word of advice if you don’t know what you want to be is to just do something.
We then went on to do our presentation to a new group of students and had our 4 students complaining that they had sore feet from being on them all the time. After we had pack up, we made our way to a workshop we got to participate in It takes a team to build a bridge. The students were given materials which they then had to use to build a bridge which could handle weight.
After the workshops we then we back to the main hall where Corey Hall of DeadlyScience spoke to the everyone about following you dreams. It was the Ashlee, Meadow and Annika’s turn on the main stage to introduce the Director of Aboriginal Education Bronwyn Milera who official closed the congress. We then made the journey back home with 4 exhausted and happy children.
